This CD Rom is a searchable database of over 550,000 records from Pevsner’s Buildings of England series. Compiled by Michael Good, it is out now on CD Rom and available by online subscription at www.pevsnerindex.co.uk. For further details on the Pevsner books see www.pevsner.co.uk. This is the second and updated edition of the CD-ROM published by Oxford University Press in 1995. The six volumes covering London have been added since, along with revised versions of six other county volumes, and five of the newly published paperback city guides.
It will be of interest to architects, art historians, librarians, researchers, planners, designers, conservators, heritage industry professionals, and fans of the series.
The database can be installed on Windows (98 and upwards), Mac (OSX) or Linux, along with a powerful search engine containing many features not available before, and an up-to-the-minute user interface with online documentation. It does not attempt to replace the books - the text is summarised and page-references provided - but acts as a general index to the series, offering three main search methods (type, site and name) supported by a variety of other searchable fields. The vast majority of personal names mentioned in the text can be retrieved. Searches may range from the widest and most powerful (nationwide datasets), to the most precise (single site survey), with sophisticated handling of dates. Cross-reference tables help you find particular terms or sites without difficulty. Results can be resorted to the user's own specifications and saved to disk for editing or printing. |
