Published annually since 1994, there has never been the slightest indication that Historic Churches
might one day run out of illuminating and fascinating subjects to treat. Tere are always little-
explored corners of our religious heritage waiting to be uncovered. Te work of Arts and Crafts
architect John Coates Carter (page 34), for example, will come as a welcome revelation to many
readers. Less esoteric, the story of English stained glass following the Reformation (page 2) may
also yield surprises and challenge our assumptions.
Historic churches are constantly changing: fabric degrades and is conserved or repaired; buildings
are adapted, extended, reinvented; new circumstances are adjusted to; new projects and initiatives
launched. Tis 17th edition of Historic Churches reveals a great deal about how churches are
forced to adapt to the fast-changing world around them. It also shows how new technologies are
helping them to meet new challenges demonstrating, for example, how digital modelling can be
used to interpret religious heritage, encouraging church tourism (page 27), and how new
technologies are helping to protect church buildings (page 17).
Two articles on church preservation in the US (pages 6 and 10) help to expand our horizons and
may also help to bring UK issues such as church funding (page 38) into sharper focus. And there
are similarities as well as contrasts to be found in the situation of historic churches hemmed in by
skyscrapers in Manhattan and in the often remote open spaces of Cumbria (page 31), not least in
terms of sharing space and fnding complementary uses.
Historic churches, wherever they are, are narratives. Tankfully, as the following pages amply
demonstrate, their stories are far from over.
