The Society aims to carry out a campaigning role to improve the position of church archaeology as a whole, involving itself in such issues as redundancy and the proper archaeological scrutiny of church repairs and building projects.

Membership includes professional archaeologists and others interested in any aspect of historic churches and chapels, their environs, their origins, development and archaeological investigation.
