Mortars are a fundamental part of unit masonry construction and render work to a wide range of different backgrounds, whether solid walls, on lath or on cavity wall construction. Choosing or designing the right mortar is essential to ensure compatibility with the background surface, to keep a building weather proof, and to the aesthetics of the structure. This introduction to specifying involves looking at the performance characteristics of building materials including substrates, relating this to exposure, environment, location, the nature of the mortar work and the time of year of working. Understanding why failures occur also helps to inform the specification process and this seminar looks at case studies of failures, so attendees will know how to avoid them!
