Women Artists and the Modern Church in Britain

4th April, 2018
The Gallery, 70 Cowcross St, London

From the turn of the 20th century to the present, women have produced diverse and complex works of art for and in response to the church. This talk by Dr Ayla Lepine (University of Essex) explores the relationship between Christian sacred spaces and women artists in a period in which feminism, culture, and Christianity engaged in new dialogues. Artists including Winifred Knights, Elizabeth Frink, Enid Chadwick and Tracey Emin have encouraged the church to include women and express sacramental theology in ways that continue to inspire and challenge.
