First locomotive-hauled railway journey

An unnamed steam locomotive, designed by mining engineer Richard Trevithick, hauled ten tons of iron and 70 men nearly ten miles along the tramway of Merthyr Tydfil’s Pen-y-Darren Ironworks. The weight of the train broke some of the cast-iron plates of the tramroad, which returned to horsepower following the trial.
