Heritage Now

HERITAGE NOW (01/2021) AUTUMN 2021   3 WELCOME WELCOME more to create stronger bonds. In England, we will be looking with interest at the results of the gov- ernment’s local heritage list campaign which was announced in February, with £1.5 million of fund- ing to ‘support projects which involve a coun- try-wide approach to developing and improving local heritage lists’. We strongly believe that providing high-quali- ty, cherished environments helps to create and maintain sustainable communities. Sustainabil- ity is something else which we have captured in our Vision, not least because the Climate Change Emergency represents one of humanity’s greatest challenges today. There is much which the her- itage sector can do to contribute to both climate change mitigation and adaptation and Historic Buildings & Places is committed to working with others in this endeavour. We are currently part of a cross-sector group which is co-ordinating herit- age communications in the lead-up to the COP26 conference in November. The images we saw of worldwide fires, floods and drought over the summer leave us in no doubt that urgent action is needed. The government will be publishing an updated Heritage Statement this autumn in which four key areas will be highlighted as priorities for the sector: Covid-19 recovery, sustainability, equality & diversity and levelling-up. These are the areas which we ourselves have identified as being the foundations of our 2022-2024 strategy. The three years leading up to our centenary will allow us to build and consolidate Historic Buildings & Places. We very much hope you will join us on this contin- uing journey.
