WHAT IS IT?

Heritage Retrofit is a new annual supplement to The Building Conservation Directory, with the first edition available this autumn. In addition to details of courses, training opportunities and useful contacts for relevant products and services, each edition will be packed with illustrated features written by leading heritage and sustainability specialists covering key issues like:

  • contemporary design, traditional technology and conservation
  • climate change, environment and economic imperatives for retrofits
  • current legislation, regulations and standards
  • surveys and assessment methodology
  • renewables and low-carbon building services – heat, light and water management, solar thermal and PV, heat exchangers and CHP
  • insulation and ventilation issues, and
  • case studies ranging from cottages to warehouse conversions.

WHY YOU'LL FIND IT USEFUL

One in four buildings in the UK is traditionally constructed, often with solid walls and lime mortars, and many are listed or in conservation areas. These buildings are easily damaged by the wrong materials or techniques. Adding insulation, for example, can be counter-productive, not only trapping moisture and causing damp and decay, but also reducing u-values. Heritage Retrofit is dedicated to providing specialist coverage of these and other related issues of concern to owners and professionals who care about their historic buildings, and the environment.
