Traditional Timber Repair and Conservation

27th Feb, 2025
Cressing Temple, Essex

This day course explores historic carpentry, identifying defects, understanding when repairs are needed and how to approach repairs effectively. The first talk will cover identification and repair methods appropriate to heavy carpentry. Modern and historic methods and hand tools will be covered, along with specialist power tools that have been designed with heavy carpentry in mind. It will also cover case studies of timber frames, discussing the process of repairs and how to pre-empt/mitigate risks along the way. The second session will allow students the opportunity to see examples of timbers and the tools best suited to repair them up close. There will also be a tour of the Grade I 13th century historic timber buildings on site at Cressing Temple.
