Most of the colleges in the two 'ancient universities' were religious foundations, many of them established by bishops for the purposes of training priests and clerks in preparation for service to the Church or State. In their pre-Reformation form, colleges were also established as much as focal points for the saying of obits as they were places of learning. The college chapels are often particularly noteworthy both architecturally and as indicators of those forces which were most influential in the Church at that moment in time. They are therefore very emblematic and informative places. In this study day, we will visit four chapels which are a representative sample of chapels at particular moments of interest, and all of which are within easy walking distance of each other. |
