This conference will review the history of social housing In Britain from the medieval hospital to current developments. Along the way it will look at: charitable foundations, almshouses, model philanthropic schemes, the Victorian Housing Acts, Homes For Heroes and twentieth century council housing. Through case studies it will consider the special problems that impact upon historic social housing as heritage assets, affect their repair and threaten their continued use. Among many others these include: the reconciliation of modern housing standards, the needs and wishes of residents, loss of estate identity, erosion of public space, poor detailing, funding, changing demography and climate change⦠|
