This one-day course offers an introduction to geoarchaeology, in other words, the application of Earth science approaches and techniques to archaeological problems. Participants will explore how the investigation of soils, sediments, and other geological materials can provide invaluable insights into past human environments, settlement patterns, and cultural landscapes. The course will cover the fundamental principles of geoarchaeology, including stratigraphy and the use of geomorphological data in archaeological interpretation. Although not covered as practical exercises, analysis of sediment and soil samples in a laboratory setting will also be discussed. Students will gain practical experience in examining stratigraphy and will learn how to describe, classify, and interpret deposits. |
