Peregrine Bryant will talk about the abandoned country houses of St Helena, a fascinating and enthralling island which has much more to offer than its well know status as the final residence of Napoleon Buonaparte. These houses mostly date from the latter part of the eighteenth to the early nineteenth century. They were built for the prominent and established families who held important positions in the East India Company during its glory days, before the Suez Canal much reduced the island's commercial importance. At the time of the talk, Peregrine, a newly retired conservation architect and a Trustee of the Commonwealth Heritage Forum, will have recently returned from his third visit to the island with Brent Fortenberry from Louisiana State University. They, with colleagues on the island, have been working on a Conservation Management Plan for the island's capital, Jamestown |
