Brunel wins Clifton Suspension Bridge competition
'); document.write('Construction of Brunel’s design, with Egyptian-influenced stone towers, began in 1831. The project was chronically underfunded, however, and was still incomplete when Brunel died in 1859. The Institution of Civil Engineers raised funds to complete the bridge as a fitting memorial to Brunel and it finally opened in 1864.
