INTERNATIONAL REGENERATION ORGANISATION
AKDN is a group of private, international, non-denominational agencies working to improve living conditions and opportunities for people in some of the poorest parts of the developing world. Interests range from health, education and culture, to economic development and regeneration.
Cultural programmes include The Aga Khan Historic Cities Programme (AKHCP), which was set up in 1992 to implement conservation and urban revitalisation projects in culturally significant sites of the Islamic world.
Urban renewal intiatives include the AKDN Nizamuddin project in New Delhi, India which revitalized and unified three historical sites dating from the 16th C. Operating though a public-private partnership between various agencies, the project is remarkable for its integration of environmental and socio-economic development with conservation (as illustrated in the video on the project's website) .
