In 2021 AMS changed its trading name to Historic Buildings & Places, but the name remains as the formal name of the charity.

Founded in 1924 (when the main vehicles for heritage protection were the Ancient Monuments Board and successive Ancient Monuments Acts), it is one of the national amenity societies which must be consulted by local authorities on listed building consent applications in England and Wales.
