The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs is the government department responsible for policy and regulations on environmental, food and rural issues in England.

The historic environment and the character of landscapes are supported by DEFRA under the Countryside Stewardship scheme, although the principal aim of the scheme is to protect and enhance the natural environment, in particular the diversity of wildlife (biodiversity) and water quality.
