The functions of the Department for Infrastructure, which was formed in May 2016, include regional development, strategic planning, transport initiatives and highways, and the inland waterways network.

The two Planning divisions (Planning Policy and Strategic Planning) are responsible for Northern Ireland's regional planning policy and for processing regionally significant or 'called-in' planning applications.
