Formerly known as the Ancient Monuments Society, AMS changed its trading name to Historic Buildings & Places in 2021 to better reflect the nature of its work.

Foundedn 1924 (when the main vehicles for heritage protection were the Ancient Monuments Board and successive Ancient Monuments Acts), it is one of the national amenity societies which must be consulted by local authorities on listed building consent applications in England and Wales.
