The trust is a statutory body established 'to promote the better protection of theatres'. Local authorities are required by government order to consult with the trust when considering planning applications affecting land on which there is a theatre.
The trust also provides expert advice on design, conservation, property and planning matters to theatre operators, local authorities and official bodies and provides an archive and library for researchers.
