Building
Conservation Information Leaflets on disk
Although many local authorities
produce excellent guidance for the public on key conservation issues,
not all can afford the time to produce the information required, and hiring
consultants to do the work can cost thousands of pounds. Our solution
is simple: a range of building conservation leaflets written by leading
conservation specialists, fully illustrated with line drawings and professionally
designed, available on disk for publication by local authorities under
their own name. The
first three titles in this series have been targeted to provide some of
the most needed guidance for the conservation of historic buildings.
Looking
After Your Old Building (an introduction to building conservation
and the law) - Matthew Saunders
8 pages, 1 illustration, on disk:
£145.00 + VAT
This guide provides an essential introduction to the conservation of old
buildings for owners of historic houses, from first principles. It explains
in plain English why conservation is important, what listed buildings
and conservation areas are, and how the legislation works. Modified versions
have been produced to suit England, Scotland and Wales, and a list of useful addresses is also included. The author is
the Secretary of the Ancient Monuments Society.
The Conservation and Renewal of Timber Windows - David Wrightson
12 pages, 15 illustrations, on disk:
£145.00 + VAT
The replacement and alteration of original windows remains one of
the most serious threats to the character of old buildings and conservation
areas. Following recent changes in the application of planning legislation,
this guide provides the essential tool every conservation officer needs
to help persuade owners of historic buildings to keep their old windows
and not to replace them with inferior modern ones or ugly plastic ones.
The author is an architect and partner in the practice of Lawrence and
Wrightson, Architects and Landscape Architects. He trained in conservation
at the IoAAS in York and is a recognised authority on the conservation
of old windows.
Pointing
with Lime Mortars - Jane Schofield
8 pages, 5 illustrations, on disk:
£145.00 + VAT
Despite a rapid growth in the number of suppliers of lime mortars and
increasing awareness of the need for lime in conservation work, it is
surprising how many builders still use highly damaging cement/sand mortars.
This guide provides a practical, easily understood introduction to the
use of lime, explaining why it is essential to historic and traditional
buildings and how it should be used for pointing masonry. The author is
a conservator who also runs courses in the use of lime at her workshop
in Devon. She is also the author of Lime in Building - a Practical
Guide.
HOW
DO THEY WORK?
Although the printed copies of the leaflets are generic, each guide you
order on disk can be modified quickly and easily to incorporate your Councils
name, address, telephone and fax number, together with any other information
you require. Once you are happy with the information, copies can be printed
straight from the PC, providing an instant solution to residents' requirements.
The format also allows enormous flexibility: illustrations and examples
of local details can be added throughout; the Councils logo and
other graphics may be added to the front page, and a variety of other
additional information may be incorporated on the back page. You could
even produce individual versions for each conservation area, or extend
the whole guide to incorporate relevant Council policy and guidance.
Illustrations: As supplied, the leaflets provide general illustrations which have been
chosen to reflect generic examples. Ideally these would be supplemented
by you to include local examples of buildings and details which are most
applicable to the local area. For example, you may wish to illustrate
a particular glazing pattern which prevails locally, a particular type
of dormer window which builders and designers often get wrong, or a distinctive
form of mortar joint.
Suppliers'
details: It is recommended that details of local suppliers of lime
putty should be added to the guide on pointing (Cathedral Communications
Limited can supply details of suppliers in most areas if required).
Printing: Leaflets are supplied on disk as standard word processing documents. These
versions can be printed straight from disk using an ordinary computer
with the relevant software and a laser printer, or imported into publishing
software for printing externally. As publishers with a long track record,
Cathedral Communications Limited can also offer a comprehensive and professional
printing service.
Licence: Under the terms of the licence, you will be able to make as many copies
as you wish from the disk. The principle requirement is that copies are
reproduced for use within a single district, borough or unitary authority.
(A discount is available to County Councils wishing to purchase copies
for use in more than one borough.)
Value
for money publications
Publishing public information
leaflets from disk is extraordinarily cost-effective. Assuming you can
print at least 500 copies, each guide costs just 29p (plus the print cost
itself). The leaflets can be printed straight from disk using an ordinary
laser jet printer as they are needed, so no further capital expenditure
is required, and only minimum council officer time.
In addition,
Cathedral Comunications Limited offer all three titles in this series
for just £395.00, representing a saving of £40.
