The primary aim of the Council for Independent Archaeology is to explore and promote ways in which amateur archaeologists and local archaeological societies can contribute more effectively to archaeology.

The Council is run entirely by volunteers, and is financed by members' subscriptions, which are £10 per annum, or £34 for four years. A weekend congress and a one day conference are organised in alternate years, backed up with a quarterly newsletter.
