The government body which is responsible for the conservation of the built heritage in Scotland, Historic Scotland advises on wide ranging historic building matters and has a statutory role in determining applications affecting the demolition of buildings which are listed or in conservation areas, and the alteration of category A and B listed buildings.

Historic Scotland also offers several grant schemes, provides technical advice, and is responsible for the management and presentation of historic properties in the nation's care.
